"The BD was very concerned with the survival of the heart. Preservation and protection of the heart was the theme of several chapters (26-30 B). The heart's importance was reflected in burial pratices as well. Alone of the major organs, the heart was left inside the corpse. For additional protection a separate heart in the form of a heart scarab was often provided in case something should happen to the deccesead's heart. The heart is mentioned frequently throughout the rest of the BD in a wide variety of contexts because, among other things, the heart was considered to be the seat of the emotions and the intellect. In short, the heart was the Egyptian equivalent of the mind, a notion perhaps best seen in the so-called Menphite Theology, in which Ptah creates the world through heart and tongue, i.e., intellect and logos."
